Failed Utopias of the Americas

Instructors: Jacob Baker and Stuart Parker

Course Objectives
When the New World was first invaded, theologians were troubled by the discovery. Had Jesus or his apostles preached there? If not, what did that mean to wars of conquest in the name of Christianity? Could one declare a just war in the name of Christ if locals had never had a chance to hear his message or convert? If they had not, heard the Gospel, might they also not be subject to the Fall? Were they children or Adam and Eve?

Some theologians concluded that the New World was a debased and degraded place created by Lucifer in mockery of the Old World, that Tenochtitlan, the New World’s Rome was the city of the Devil himself. But others wondered if this were actually the world as it was before the Fall, pristine and exempt from original sin. Others saw the results of the epidemics or the massive depopulation and determined that the New World had been cleansed by God so that Europeans might make a fresh start, unencumbered by the mistakes of the past.

This meant that, from its inception, a portion of the New World’s invaders saw it as an opportunity not for exploitation, plunder and conquest but a chance to finally build a utopia, a City on a Hill.

Co-taught by Jacob Baker, a theologian of the broad Mormon tradition and Stuart Parker, a historian and former Green Party leader intimately familiar with the back-to-the-lander movement, this course will trace the history of the utopian projects of the Americas, including the Republic of Los Altos, after which this institute is named. Beginning with Roger Williams and the radical Baptists who broke away from Puritan Massachusetts in the seventeenth century, the course presents a diversity of utopian movements and communities, their successes and failures up to the present day.

Difficulty Level
This course’s lecture content requires no prior specialized knowledge and is based on general knowledge widely available to any high school graduate who keeps up with the news. The one challenge element of the course is the reading. A portion of the reading is in the form of academic articles that are not very accessibly written. To accommodate this, questions are expected, welcomed and encouraged for those seeking basic clarifications of opaque language and occult terminology in anything they are asked to read for the course.

Texts
At the beginning of the course, students will receive a series of Dropbox links to download each of the videos and readings we will be discussing.

Class Schedule
We will be meeting twice a week at 5:30pm on Zoom Mondays and Wednesdays, starting on November 24th . Participants will also be subscribed to a Google group and a Facebook group to carry on discussion outside of class time.  In all, the class will have thirteen episodes. The course is in the process of being rescheduled; registrants and other interested parties will be contacted with new dates.
